Roca News (Portuguese pronunciation: [ɾɔkɐ]) is an idependent American news media company founded in 2020 by William "Billy" Carney, Max Fosh, and Max Towey. Founded in Washington, D.C., Roca is headquartered in New York City and as of November 2023 has 11 employees.

Name

Roca News was originally named Pluto News, but after a legal adviser informed the company of a potential conflict with Disney over the popular cartoon character Pluto, the founders decided to consider other names.[3] The founders jokingly considered removing the vowels and using the name "PLT NWS", but ultimately chose to name the company after the biannual Pororoca tidal bore on the Amazon River, stating "it’s a wave that brings people together. That’s Roca’s mission with the news."[3][4]
