Somerset

I appreciate that you were bold in merging Somerset Council into Somerset County Council and the associated changes to both articles plus Somerset. However I strongly disagree. The move, which amounts to deleting the article, needs to be discussed, so please if you want to push ahead discuss at Talk:Somerset Council. 10mmsocket (talk) 20:37, 22 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for letting me know, I've opened a talk page discussion and pinged you. Just to be clear, I know reversions are part of the BOLD process and I'm not at all offended that you've done so :) A.D.Hope (talk) 21:08, 22 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

East Riding of Yorkshire Flag

The Flag institute register all flags, the East Riding of Yorkshire Flag was registered as the new flag for the East Riding of Yorkshire after a competition in 2013 so has nothing to do with historic county but the current county. See https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-humber-22205387 Keith D (talk) 20:35, 27 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

When it comes to the counties the Flag Institute only register flags for historic areas, I think. The page for the East Riding flag on the Institute's website calls it the flag for a 'historic riding of Yorkshire', and on the Yorkshire flag page only the North, West, and East riding flags are shown. They do also say somewhere that the county flags they register are for the historic counties, although the website seems to have gone down as I've typed this out...
It is a bit awkward, but Wikipedia sources the county flags via the Institute so we broadly have to follow their interpretation of the areas they represent. A.D.Hope (talk) 21:51, 27 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Cumberland

I'd just note that there was a discussion at Talk:Cumberland (district)#Requested move 12 January 2023 which was closed as "not moved" so I'm not sure it should have been moved that said it does look like there was a consensus for the move and it makes sense so I'm not going to ask you to revert, just pointing out, thanks. Crouch, Swale (talk) 16:07, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! Sorry, I didn't notice the move discussion and I should have checked more thoroughly before carrying out the move. If you're happy to leave things as they are I won't move it back — we may as well have consistency among the district article names for now, even if a later move request sees them all merged into their ceremonial county articles. Is that okay, or would you rather me revert? A.D.Hope (talk) 16:20, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think unless someone objects then its fine to just leave it as is. As I said I think to be consistent it should have been moved but I don't really fault the closer as most of the discussion had indeed been on merges. Crouch, Swale (talk) 16:34, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Great, thanks again for letting me know :) A.D.Hope (talk) 16:37, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Pinging

Just noticed at UKGEO you attempted to ping in this edit, for me it did not work. Please see Help:Fixing failed pings. I believe it may have not worked because your signature was just text with no link (main thing I think) nor using four tildes (~). If you want to ping those contributors again but not repair the existing ping (re-pinging seems easier IMO) and continue the discussion. I believe using {{ping}} so e.g. {{ping|DankJae|User2}} and adding four tildes (~) in the same edit, makes them work?

In terms of the discussion, I am kinda lost in the long-wielded debate between you and RW tbh and was not following it, although RW seems to have gotten personal, so hope you're doing well. DankJae 00:41, 3 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! How are you doing? Always nice to hear from you.
I've absolutely no idea why my signature ended up as text with no link, as I practically always use four tildes. Pings in general never seem to go right for me! I'm not sure it's worth re-pinging, however, at least not just yet — I ended up raising RW's behaviour at ANI, and I'm doing my best to keep out of it until the process is finished. It's a shame the discussion went the way it did, as putting the personal stuff aside RW did raise some points worth considering. A.D.Hope (talk) 11:14, 3 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Slight correction to your Derbyshire edit

Hi AD without picking fault intentionally, did you read your last edit to Derbyshire when rewriting the lead? You added Derby as the county town but failed to actually see that Matlock is the county town as Derby hasn't been the county town since the county council moved to Matlock. I am only asking you to double check your edits carefully when adding or tweaking information as I've had to change it back to Matlock. https://derbyshireheritage.co.uk/towns-and-villages/matlock/ confirms Matlock as the county town since it moved from Derby. Just please be a bit more careful when removing key information I've changed it but I've been schooled enough time on it. Just giving you a heads up. DragonofBatley (talk) 22:39, 3 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the heads up, DragonofBatley, and thanks for fixing the error. A.D.Hope (talk) 22:45, 3 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Suffolk.

put Suffolk into wiki search engine and this article comes up. The flag is both historical and current for the county and as such needs to be there. How do you separate ceremonial and historical? Edmund Patrick confer 14:21, 10 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Edmund Patrick I suggest you continue this discussion at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_UK_geography#c-A.D.Hope-20230709170900-10mmsocket-20230709170400, where I for example fully agree with what you are saying (although it's Somerset in my case). 10mmsocket (talk) 14:28, 10 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Are you watching my talk page, 10mmsocket? From my end it looks a bit odd that you haven't replied to my last comment at UK Geography but responded to this topic within seven minutes. A.D.Hope (talk) 14:59, 10 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I watch pages that I have previously edited - it's a prefs thing. I'll take a look at the Wikiproject message 10mmsocket (talk) 15:27, 10 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It's not that I particularly mind, I just found it a bit spooky! Please don't think I'm irritated A.D.Hope (talk) 15:28, 10 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Of course. And do know that, infobox flags aside, you're doing some really useful stuff in the county articles! 10mmsocket (talk) 15:38, 10 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
As 10mmsocket says, if you wouldn't mind raising this at the UK Geography discussion that would be easier. It keeps the discussion in one place, that's all. A.D.Hope (talk) 15:00, 10 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you both, will do. Edmund Patrick confer 15:08, 10 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
