Wikipedia:Changing username/Usurpations

This page is for requests to take over an account name that is already registered. If you want your account renamed to a name that is still available, please use Special:GlobalRenameRequest or Wikipedia:Changing username/Simple.

This page is a forum in which users can request, and global renamers (including Stewards) familiar with local usurpation guidelines, can consider and carry out, the "usurpation" of usernames primarily held locally. This consists of renaming an existing account in order to vacate the username and allow another user to take it.

Please note that global accounts whose "home wiki" is another project or which have significant attachments on other projects cannot be usurped here; these requests must be made at meta:Steward requests/Username changes (see meta:Help:Unified login).

A few users have agreed to provide assistance with the mechanics of this process. If you wish to assist as well, please read the linked page carefully.

• The account you want to usurp must have the English Wikipedia as its "home wiki", i.e. or should be displayed next to the en.wikipedia.org entry for the account at Special:CentralAuth.
• The account you want to usurp should have no edits or significant log entries to qualify for usurpation (though rare exceptions are made in some circumstances). This includes edits or log actions on other Wikimedia projects. These can be checked through Special:CentralAuth.
• Please do not request usurpation of another account if your own user account is less than several months old, or barely used. In order to ensure that usurped usernames be put to good use, we prefer only to grant requests from reasonably well-established users.

Instructions

1. Log in to your present account.
   • Please do not leave a talk page message or e-mail the target account yourself. If this becomes necessary, a user familiar with the usurpation process will do so.
2. Click here to place your request.
   1. Replace "TARGET NAME" with the username you wish to usurp.
   2. Replace "YOUR REASON" with a description of why you want to usurp the account.
   3. Leave the "Subject/headline" field blank.

If the URL above does not work, simply copy the following text, click "edit this page" and paste it at the bottom of the page. Modify it as indicated.

Advanced usage

For requests involving renaming an account other than your logged in account, use this: {{subst:usurp|CURRENT NAME|TARGET NAME|reason=YOUR REASON}} For usurp only requests, which leaves your logged in account untouched, set the usurponly parameter to yes: {{subst:usurp|TARGET NAME|usurponly=yes|reason=YOUR REASON}} To add an optional non default signature, use the sig parameter: {{subst:usurp|TARGET NAME|reason=YOUR REASON|sig=OPTIONAL SIGNATURE}}

3. Preview the changes and make sure both names are spelled correctly. Click "Publish changes".
4. Your request is now complete and ready to be processed after the hold period (usually about a week). If the owner of the target account does not object, a global renamer will fulfill your request provided other requirements are met. Do not be surprised when you find yourself unable to log in to your old account.

• Requests that do not adhere to these instructions or that are grossly malformed are subject to removal.

The account called Verbal hasn't been used since its creation in 2005, and my current account name has cause problems by being to long. Realising Verbal wasn't used (and thinking it hadn't been created) I started to use the nick, but was surprised I couldn't register the name. I eventually realised it had been created but not used, and that this is the place to request usurpation. Due to these, my current username is not very appropiate for serious conversations.   This username is the name which I've been using on Wikiversity, Meta and Wikibooks - this was created by me but by SUL which was removed - my Dark Mage account had only made one edit over on the Administrator's noticeboard, but if you need confirmation I'll access my Dark Mage account here - and also my main Wikiversity Dark Mage account to confirm this request - I had left previously due to the increase in vandalism and the rise number of threats but however though I wouldn't mind returning to this site but under my current username which I'm using on Wikiversity. And I've just logged back into my Terra account, as you can see I created Dark Mage by SUL from Meta - but didn't realize it would create an account under the new username which I'm using on Meta and on Wikiversity - so it was created by accident over here on Wikipedia. I see what you mean. You must've been logged in on the other sites you are active on and the SUL meant that Dark Mage was created automatically on viewing en.wp pages. Fortunately, you operate the SUL so I see no problem is this happening; you will lose all contributions under the current Dark Mage account though. If my Terra account gets renamed to Dark Mage which I'm using on Wikiversity, Wikibooks and also Meta - then all of the contributions which I've done on this site will not be lost - I am intending to return to the site, but only semi-active but I want to be known by Dark Mage - Changing a username will not lose the contributions and besides the SUL link is no more, I had it removed and it'll not affect my Dark Mage accounts on other Wikimedia Sites, I didn't realize though that SUL would indeed create the Dark Mage username on this site, if the SUL didn't have done automatically then I would have placed my request on the main Changing username page and not here.
