Father Yusuf Akbulut is an Syriac Orthodox priest who was arrested by Turkish authorities after stating in an interview that he believed Armenians, Syriacs, and Greeks were subjected to a genocide by Turkey. In October of 2000, he was approached by reporters from the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet and questioned about his opinion regarding the Armenian Genocide, to which he responded that not only Armenians but Syriacs were also massacred. Father Akbulut was arrested and charged with inciting racial hatred.[1] He was released after Turkey came under pressure from human rights groups and a campaign organized by Syriacs, Armenians, Greeks, and Kurds.
