The 2022 Liberty Bowl is a college football bowl game that is scheduled to be played on December 28, 2022, at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium in Memphis, Tennessee. The 64th annual Liberty Bowl will feature the Kansas Jayhawks from the Big 12 Conference and the Arkansas Razorbacks from the Southeastern Conference (SEC). The game is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. CST and will air on ESPN.[3] It will be one of the 2022–23 bowl games concluding the 2022 FBS football season. The primary sponsor of the Liberty Bowl is the automotive store AutoZone, therefore the game is officially named the AutoZone Liberty Bowl.
Teams
Based on conference tie-ins, the game will feature the Kansas Jayhawks from the Big 12 Conference and the Arkansas Razorbacks from the Southeastern Conference.[4] The Jayhawks and Razorbacks have only met twice, in 1905 and 1906, with the Jayhawks winning both games.[5] Both teams became bowl eligible by beating a ranked team, Kansas beat 18th ranked Oklahoma State and Arkansas beat 14th ranked Ole Miss.
Kansas
The Jayhawks will be making their first bowl game appearance since the 2008 Insight Bowl. It will be their first Liberty Bowl appearance since the 1973 Liberty Bowl. The Jayhawks began the season 5-0 before going 1–6 in the final 7 games. After their 5–0 start, Kansas became ranked for the first time since 2009 before falling out of the rankings after losing back-to-back games. Prior to his injury in the Jayhawks sixth game of the season, Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels was considered by some as a Heisman Trophy candidate.
Arkansas
The Razorbacks will be making their 2nd straight bowl appearance. They last played in the Liberty Bowl in the 2016 Liberty Bowl. The Razorbacks began the season 3–0 before losing 3 straight games, however, all three losses in the streak were to ranked teams.
