"X" (Korean: 걸어온 길에 꽃밭 따윈 없었죠; RR: Georeo-on Gir-e Kkotbat Ttawin Eobseotjyo) is a song recorded by South Korean singer Chungha. It was released on January 19, 2021, through MNH, as the third single from the singer's first Korean-language studio album, Querencia. It was originally scheduled to be released on December 10, 2020, however it was delayed after she was diagnosed with COVID-19. "X" is a modern pop rock number characterized by a rich melody.[1] The track is about going through the lowest point in your life and losing everything but putting yourself back together.[1]
Background
On November 18, the singer dropped a series of teasers on her social media channels and one of which states a new collaboration single "Dream of You" between the singer and an unnamed artist, which would be released on November 27, accompanied with "X", that was set to be released on December 10.[2][3] Chungha also announced that her first studio album would be released on January 4, 2021.[4] On December 7, it was confirmed that Chungha has tested positive for COVID-19. All her activities were temporarily halted and she was on self-isolation.[5] On December 9, MNH Entertainment announced that Chungha's pre-release single "X" and upcoming studio album Querencia would be delayed to focus on her recovery.[6][7] On January 11, 2021 Chungha announced that "X" will be released on January 19, while Querencia will be released on February 15.[8]
Composition and lyrics
"X" was written by Cliff Lin, The Black Skirts and the production was also handled by them. "X" is a modern pop rock number characterized by a rich melody.[1] In terms of musical notation, the song is composed in the key of F♭ major, with a tempo of 138 beats per minute.[9] It runs for four minutes and fifteen seconds.[10] Lyrically, the song is about going through the lowest point in your life and losing everything but putting yourself back together.[1]
I think it's a song that anyone could relate to. And i think you could also feel a sense of cathartic release from it. I keep zoning out whenever I listen to this song. And i hope a lot of listeners, general public, and Byulharang could zone out also listening to this song. The song is pretty long. It's over 4 minutes. So how about zoning out for 4-5 minutes?
Music video
An accompanying music video directed by Dee Shin and Kim Zi Yong, was released alongside the song.[12] On December 6, 2020 the singer released a 23-second teaser of the song and music video on her official YouTube channel.[13] On January 17, 2021 the second teaser video was released.[14]
Synopsis
In the released music video, Chungha is a giant monster who remains alone in a world of black and white light and dances creatively.[12] The figure of Chungha walking silently in the midst of a lonely and dizzying mood makes the lyrics of this song stand out.[12] The video ends with the spoken lyrics: "You should've loved me at my worst / Now you just watch me on your TV screen."[12]
