Background

It all began with Nobu Matsuhisa cooking at his Sushi restaurant Matsuhisa in Los Angeles and Robert De Niro who was a regular client at the restaurant since 1988.[1] After a while during which De Niro brought his friends and family to the place he offered to open a restaurant in Tribeca, New York together with Matsuhisa. Nobu Matsuhisa thought that it was too early for his team to open another restaurant at the time, and declined.[1] De Niro didn't give up and kept coming to the restaurant Matsuhisa, when he was in Los Angeles and by 1994, he convinced Nobu Matsuhisa to open a restaurant in Tribeca.[1]

History

Restaurants

In 1994, Nobu Matsuhisa, the actor Robert De Niro, restaurateur Drew Nieporent and investor Meir Teper agreed to a joint venture and on the 17 September 1994, the first Nobu opened its doors.[2] Nobu's famous signature dish is black cod with miso.[3]

By 1997 the first Nobu opened outside of the United States, in London.[2] By 2018, the chain has expanded to 38 restaurants[4] and currently (November 2020) counts 47 restaurants.[5]

Hotels

The first Nobu Hotel opened inside Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, Nevada in 2013.[6] Two years later, in May 2015, the Nobu opened a Hotel in the City of Dreams, Manila, Philippines.[7] In October of the same year, the Australian billionaire James Packer bought a stake of 20% of Nobu for 100 Mio.$.[8] By October 2020, the chain had 13 hotels.[9]
