Maharaja Sangam Rai Kapoor from Kotli, Punjab was the founder of the Burdhman Raj (1657–1955) in West Bengal, a princely state that extended around 5,000 square miles (13,000 km) and included many parts of what is now Burdwan, Bankura, Medinipur, Howrah, Hooghly and Murshidabad districts.[1]
