- Thomas (No. 1) is a blue tank engine of the North Western Railway. He initially worked as the station pilot at the Big Station. After helping to rescue James from an accident, Thomas was rewarded with two new coaches, Annie and Clarabel, and was assigned to the Ffarquhar Branch Line.
- Edward (No. 2) is a blue mixed-traffic tender engine. He runs his own branch line with BoCo. Edward is one of the oldest engines on Sodor and is occasionally made fun of for his age. He is wise and optimistic and spreads his knowledge to the other engines. After a berth at Tidmouth Sheds was destroyed, Edward left the other engines living there to live at Wellsworth Sheds.
- Henry (No. 3) is a green mixed-traffic tender engine who works on the Main Line. He was originally a prototype engine that needed special Welsh coal to operate properly. Following an accident when pulling the Flying Kipper, Henry was rebuilt giving him a new shape and better performance, and eliminating the need for the expensive special coal. Henry moved out of Tidmouth Sheds to live at Vicarstown Sheds in order to be closer to his jobs.
- Gordon (No. 4) is a blue express engine who works on the Main Line. He is Flying Scotsman's only surviving brother. Gordon is also one of the fastest and strongest engines on the Island of Sodor and his main task is to pull the Wild Nor' Wester, the railway's express train. At times, this leads him to feel superior. He is mainly used for passenger duties, but has occasionally pulled goods trains, much to his dislike, as he believes that these are below him.
- James (No. 5) is a red mixed-traffic tender engine who works on the North Western Railway, usually on the Main Line. He can be vain and sometimes boastful, but means well and is a hard worker.
- Percy (No. 6) is a green saddle tank engine who was brought to Sodor to help run the railway during Gordon, Henry and James' strike. He is Thomas' best friend and one of the youngest engines on the North Western Railway and often gets into trouble with his attempts to play tricks on the other engines. His favorite job is to deliver the mail and he works on Thomas' Branch Line as a goods engine.
- Toby (No. 7) is a steam tram who works on Thomas' Branch Line with his coach Henrietta. Toby is wise and always willing to share his experience and knowledge with the other engines. He is careful with every job he undertakes and rarely has accidents.
- Duck: (No. 8) is a green Great Western engine who runs his own branch line with Oliver. He thinks there are two ways of doing things, the Great Western way and the wrong way. Duck’s real name is Montague, but he is nicknamed Duck because he “waddles”.
- Donald and Douglas (No. 9 and 10) are twin black mixed-traffic Scottish tender engines. They tend to work together on the railway. although they can be argumentative.
- Oliver (No. 11) is a green Great Western tank engine. He and his brake van Toad were originally meant to be scrapped, but they were saved by the Scottish twin Douglas. After his escape he became boastful about his it, although he has become more humble since then.
- Emily (No. 12) is a green Stirling Silver tender engine. She was the only female engine living at Tidmouth Sheds before the arrivals of Nia and Rebecca. Emily is kind, caring, and often acts as a voice of reason.
- Nia (No. 18) is an orange tank engine who originally lived in Kenya before going on a world adventure with Thomas. When Thomas had to return to Sodor, she revealed she had no home to go to since her shed was destroyed, so Thomas invited her to live on Sodor, taking Edward's place at Tidmouth Sheds. Nia is friendly and a good problem solver.
- Rebecca (No.22) is a streamlined yellow tender engine who took the place of Henry when he left Tidmouth Sheds. She is originally from England. Despite her size she is shy and clumsy. Rebecca occasionally pulls the railway's express train.
- Bill and Ben are yellow twin tank engines owned by the Sodor China Clay Company. They are mischievous and love to play pranks on the other engines.
