Rafael Bernardo López Aliaga Cazorla (born 11 February 1961) is a Peruvian industrial engineer, businessman, and politician. A leading conservative figure in Peruvian politics, he is the founder and current leader of the Popular Renewal party since October 2020. Previously, he served as Secretary-General of National Solidarity from September 2019 until the dissolution of the party in October 2020 in which he served as President of the Party since August 2020.[1]
Entering politics through the Lima City Council in 2007, López Aliaga maintained a low profile until 2019, when he was elected to the party leadership of National Solidarity in September 2019. Following the dissolution of the Peruvian Congress, his party was set to run at the 2020 parliamentary election. Initially a moderate conservative, López Aliaga adopted a Conservative platform.[2]
During the 2020 campaign, López Aliaga announced his intention to run for President of Peru at the 2021 general election, stating in a televised interview that he considered himself to be "the Peruvian Bolsonaro".[3] Following to his party's poor results at the 2020 parliamentary election, he announced an organizational re-foundation.[4][5]
In October 2020, López Aliaga officially founded Popular Renewal, effectively dissolving National Solidarity by changing the registered organization's name and platform. Assuming the position of party president, he stated that the party is "re-founded with principles of solidarity and anchored in God, Christ."[6]
Personal life
He was raised in Hacienda Pomalca were his father worked. When he finished high school, he began to study Civil Engineering enat Universidad Nacional Pedro Ruiz Gallo (UNPRG), in Lambayeque. Due to Peruvian political unrest, there were delays in the classes at the university UNPRG, and he decided to take the entrance exam at the Univeridad de Piura, a private university two hours from Lambayeque. He passed the entrance exam and he continued his studies in Industrial Engineering at the Universidad de Piura and adquired the professional degree of Industrial Engineering. López Aliaga is a member of Opus Dei.[7]
