Dark Winds is an upcoming American psychological thriller television series created by Graham Roland based on the Leaphorn & Chee book series by Tony Hillerman. The first season will consist of six episodes, and is set to premiere on AMC and AMC+ on June 12, 2022.[1]
Premise
The series follows two Navajo police officers, Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee, in the 1970s Southwest.[2][3]

- Rainn Wilson as Devoted Dan: A degenerate missionary who relies on his faith to recruit followers.[6]
- Deanna Allison as Emma: Leaphorn's wife[7]

Production
Development
In July 2021, it was announced that AMC had greenlighted Dark Winds for a six-episode order.[2] The series is created by Graham Roland, who executive produces with Zahn McClarnon, George R. R. Martin, Robert Redford, Tina Elmo, Vince Gerardis, Vince Calandra, and Chris Eyre.[2][4] Redford previously produced two other adaptions of the Leaphorn & Chee series, The Dark Wind and Skinwalkers. Calandra serves as showrunner, and Eyre directed the pilot. The series is produced by AMC Networks and Dark Winds Productions.[4][8]
Writing
The writers' room is all Native American.[9]
Casting
Alongside the series announcement, Zahn McClarnon and Kiowa Gordon were cast as Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee.[2][4] In August 2021, Noah Emmerich was cast as Whitover.[3] Jessica Matten, was cast as Bernadette Manuelito.[5] Rainn Wilson was cast as Devoted Dan in early September.[6] In February 2022, it was revealed that Deanna Allison would make her television acting debut on the show as Leaphorn's wife, Emma.[7]
Filming
Filming began on August 23, 2021, in Santa Fe, New Mexico.[10][11] Location shoots also occurred in Española, Tesuque Pueblo, Cochiti Pueblo, and the Navajo Nation.[12][8] In mid-October, the series filmed in Mexican Hat, Monument Valley and Kayenta.[13] Filming was expected to wrap on November 11, 2021.[10][14]
