Hing (surname)
Hing is an English surname, recorded in London from the 17th century.
It is probably from the name of a 'lost' settlement in England, although it has been suggested that it means hingemaker. This is unlikely, as hinges were usually made by blacksmiths.[1]
It is also the romanisation, from Cantonese pronunciation, of the Chinese surname pronounced Qīng in Mandarin (卿). The surname is found mostly in southern China. People with this surname include:
- Leah Hing (1907–2001), first Chinese-American woman to earn a pilot's license
- Alex Hing, one of the leaders of the Red Guard Party, a radical Chinese-American organization founded in 1969
