Baselios Matthew II was the Maphrian of the East of the Syriac Orthodox Church from 1713 until his death in 1727.

Biography

Iyawannis, as son of Li’azar, was born into a prominent family, renowned for producing a number of high-ranking members within the church. Upon the death of the Maphrian Baselios Lazarus III, Iyawannis was consecrated as his successor in 1713 by Iyawannis' brother, Ignatius Isaac Azar, at the Monastery of Mor Hananyo. As maphrian, Iyawannis assumed the name Baselios Matthew II.

The maphrianate of the East was administered by Matthew until his death in September 1727. Matthew was entombed alongside Ignatius Isaac Azar at the Church of Mar Tuma in Mosul.
