One of the founders and author of the first program of historical and civil rights society Memorial.[4] From January 13 to June 18, 1993, Acting Director of the Vernadsky State Geological Museum. From 1996 to 2008 he was the director of Sakharov Center.

In 2010, signed the appeal Putin Must Go. Author of articles for Echo of Moscow,[5], Kasparov.ru[6] and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.[7]
