Spassky District (Russian: Спа́сский райо́н; Tatar: Спас районы, romanized: Spas rayonı) is an administrative[1] and municipal[6] district (raion), one of the forty-three in the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia. It is located in the southwest of the republic. The area of the district is 2,028 square kilometers (783 sq mi).[3] Its administrative center is the town of Bolgar.[2] Population: 20,554 (2010 Russian census);[4] 21,779 (2002 Census);[8] 23,346 (1989 Soviet census).[9] The population of Bolgar accounts for 42.1% of the district's total population.[4] There are some historical buildings on the territory of the district and the Museum of Bread.
History
Until October 4, 1991, the district was called Kuybyshevsky (Куйбышевский).
