Liu Chao-han (simplified Chinese: 刘兆汉; traditional Chinese: 劉兆漢; pinyin: Liú Zhàohàn; born 3 January 1939) is a Taiwanese physicist and educator who served as President of National Central University from June 1990 to February 2003. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, an Academician of the Academia Sinica and a Member of the National Academy of Engineering.[1]
Biography
Liu was born in Hengyang, Hunan, on January 3, 1939, to Liu Guoyun (Chinese: 劉國運), a general in the Republic of China Armed Forces, and Zhong Wanfang (Chinese: 鍾畹芳). He has five brothers, Liu Chaoning (Chinese: 劉兆寧), Liu Chaohua (Chinese: 劉兆華), Liu Chaoli (Chinese: 劉兆藜), Liu Chao-shiuan, and Liu Chaokai (Chinese: 劉兆凱).
He received his bachelor's degree in Electrical engineering from National Taiwan University in 1960 and earned his Doctor's degree in Electrical engineering from Brown University in 1965.
He joined the faculty of the University of Illinois system in 1965 and was promoted to full professor in 1974 and became professor emeritus in 1993.
In 1981, he was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
He was President of National Central University in 1990, and held that office until 2003.[2] He then served as President of University System of Taiwan until 2006.
He was the chairman of the Chinese Geoscience Union from 1994 to 1996. In 1998, he was elected an Academician of the Academia Sinica. In 2004, he was elected a fellow of The World Academy of Sciences. In 2006 he was appointed Vice-President of Academia Sinica, a position he held until 2011.
In 2012, he was elected a foreign associate of the National Academy of Engineering.[3]
In 2019, National Central University named the No. 207603 asteroid discovered by the Lulin Observatory as "Liuchaohan" in his honor.
Personal life
Liu married Meng Cuizhu (Chinese: 孟粹珠). They have a daughter, Alice C.Y. Liu, and a son, Robert C.B. Liu.
