The 2016 Camellia Bowl was a post-season American college football bowl game played on December 17, 2016 at Cramton Bowl in Montgomery, Alabama. The third annual edition of the Camellia Bowl is one of the 2016–17 bowl games that concludes the 2016 FBS football season. Sponsored by television broadcasting company Raycom Media, it is officially known as the Raycom Media Camellia Bowl.[5]

Team selection

The game featured the Appalachian State Mountaineers against the Toledo Rockets.

This was the first-ever meeting between the two schools. This was the first appearance in the Camellia Bowl for Toledo, whereas Appalachian State had earned their first bowl win as a member of the FBS in the previous year's game.

On the play after the kickoff, Toledo QB Logan Woodside found Corey Jones for a 58-yard completion down to the App State 17. 3 plays later, Woodside found Micheal Roberts for a 15 yd strike that tied the game 7–7. After trading 6 punts in a row, App St broke the silence with a 13 yd TD run to go up 14–7. The teams then traded punts before Toledo took 2 plays to tie the game on a 36-yard Kareem Hunt TD run to make the score 14–14. App St then scored in the 3rd thanks to 28 and 13 yard runs by Taylor Lamb to go up 21–14. Toledo answered with a touchdown of its own to tie it. Appalachian State ran back the kickoff to take a 28–21 lead. Toledo's next drive produced another touchdown, tying the game once again late in the third quarter, but the only scoring of the final quarter was an Appalachian State field goal, giving the Mountaineers the 31–28 win. Appalachian State became the first team to win multiple Camellia Bowls in just the third year of the bowl's existence.
