Terence "Terry" McLaughlin is a Canadian sailor who has competed in the Olympics.[1]
Biography
McLaughlin was born July 24, 1956 in Toronto, Ontario to Paul McLaughlin,[1] who competed in the 1948 Olympic dinghy regatta.[2] He is the brother of Frank McLaughlin, who won a bronze medal in the Flying Dutchman class at the 1988 Summer Olympics.[1]
McLaughlin attended St. Michael's College School and then majored in Economics at Queen's University.[3]
McLaughlin was to compete in the Moscow 1980 Summer Olympics but did not, due to the boycott of the event by western countries.[1]
McLaughlin won a silver medal in the Flying Dutchman Class at the Los Angeles 1984 Summer Olympics with Evert Bastet.
McLaughlin has won the York Cup match-racing series five times.[3]
McLaughlin skippered Canada One in the 1983 Louis Vuitton Cup.[1]
McLaughlin skippered Defiant, out of RCYC, to win both the 2001 and 2003 editions of the Canada's Cup.
McLaughlin was the 2001 Rolex Sailor of the Year.[4]
McLaughlin skippered the Royal Canadian Yacht Club Swan 42 yacht Daring to win the 2011[5][6] and 2013 New York Yacht Club Invitational Cups and the 2013 Swan 42 National Championships.[7][8] As a result, he won the 2013 Sail Canada Rolex Sailor of the Year.[9][10]
