Martina Navratilova was the defending champion of the Avon Championships season-ending tennis tournament.

Fifth-seeded Sylvia Hanika won the title by defeating first seeded Martina Navratilova 1–6, 6–3, 6–4 in the final.[1][2] [3][4]
