Sultan Mansur Shah ibni Almarhum Sultan Ahmad Shah I (died 1519) is the fourth Sultan of Pahang who reigned from 1495 to 1519. He reigned jointly with his cousin, Abdul Jamil Shah I who succeeded on the abdication of his father, Ahmad Shah I in 1495.[1]

Early life

Known as Raja Mansur before his accession, he is the son of the second Sultan of Pahang, Ahmad Shah I by his wife, a daughter of Bendahara Tun Hamzah.[citation needed] He ascended to the throne at a very young age following the abdication of his father, Ahmad Shah I, who went into religious seclusion in 1495.[2] As a result, he reigned under the rule of his cousin, Abdul Jamil Shah I and assumed full control only in 1512 after the death of the latter.[3]

Reign

Recognising Pahang was a vassal of Melaka, the Portuguese who had established themselves after the conquest of Melaka, demanded tribute from Pahang. Mansur Shah I refused to pay the annual tribute, which resulted in open warfare between Pahang and the Portuguese.[1]
