Javad Uyezd (Template:Lang-ru, Template:Lang-az) was an administrative unit within the Baku Governorate and Azerbaijan SSR. The center was (since 1916 - a city) Salyan. In 1920 it was renamed Salyan Uyezd.
History
Javad Uyezd was formed in 1868 as part of the Baku Governorate, from part of the territory of Lenkoran, Shemakha and Shusha uyezds. In 1920, Javad Uyezd became part of the Azerbaijan SSR and was renamed Salyan.[2]
Abolished in 1929.[3]
Population
According to the Brockhaus and Efron Encyclopedic Dictionary, published in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, 94,690 people lived in the county, mainly Azerbaijanis (in BEED - “tatars”).[4]
According to the 1897 census, 90,043 people lived in the county, of which 11,787 were in Salyan.[5] The census recorded 84,054 native speakers of Azerbaijan (the census indicates “tatar”) as the native language and 4,009 russian.[6]
According to the 1926 census, the population of the uyezd was 129,367.[1]
