Amala is the debut studio album by American singer and rapper Doja Cat, released on March 30, 2018 via Kemosabe and RCA Records.[3] The album features guest appearances from Konshens and Rico Nasty. The album's deluxe version was released on March 1, 2019.[4] The album peaked at number 138 on the Billboard 200 chart.[5]

Background

On March 27, 2018, Doja Cat's label announced the album via their Twitter. In addition to announcing the release date of the album, they also revealed the title of the project and its cover.

Artwork

RCA Records said that the album "unlocks a sweetly sexy world soundtracked by wild hip-hop, twisted pop, and smoked-out R&B. Asserting a feline-esque dominance, her unapologetic charisma, charm, and confidence immediately take center stage."[6]

Singles

The album's lead single, titled "Go To Town", was released on March 9, 2018 along with a music video.[7][8] Doja Cat further went on to promote the single by appearing on Genius' show "Verified".[9] A week before the album's release, "Candy", was released as the album's second single on March 23, 2018. The track became a sleeper hit after a dance challenge on the app TikTok went viral in late 2019.[10] Consequently, the single charted in countries such as Australia, Canada and the United States, the latter having the song peak at 86 on the Billboard Hot 100 becoming her first solo entry on the chart.[11] The single "Mooo!" was released on August 10, 2018 along with a music video. The track would be the first of Doja's to become a viral phenomenon[12][13][14] and would eventually surpass over seventy five million views on YouTube as of June 19, 2020.[15] The track would later be included as the first single of the deluxe edition of the album.[16] The following single from the deluxe edition, titled "Tia Tamera", was released on January 31, 2019 as a collaboration with American rapper Rico Nasty. A music video was released on February 21, 2019.[17] The third and final single from the deluxe edition, titled "Juicy", was originally released on March 1, 2019 on the deluxe edition of Amala. On August 15, 2019, a remix of the song was released with American rapper Tyga as a single along with a music video.[18] The version with Tyga was included on Doja Cat's second studio album, Hot Pink.[19]

"Roll With Us" was released as the album's first and only promotional single on February 1, 2018.[20]
