Bahuchithawadiya (The Undecided) (Sinhala: බහුචිතවාදියා) is an upcoming Sri Lankan Sinhala drama romance film directed and produced by Malaka Dewapriya.[2][3][4] It stars Kalana Gunasekara and Veena Jayakody in lead roles along with Lakshman Mendis, Samanalee Fonseka and Damitha Abeyratne. In other words ‘an undecided mind’ The term ‘Bahuchithawadiya’ was coined to denote the nature of our youth in contemporary society in Sri Lanka.

It is the debut feature film by Malaka Dewapriya and film has awarded in many film festivals.[7][8] The film received many positive reviews from critics.[9]

Plot

Sasitha works as the underpaid delivery man for Giftnet, an Internet-based business which accepts gift orders from outside Sri Lanka. Suffocated by economic pressures and sexual frustrations, like most of his peers he sees going abroad as the only way out of his wretched existence. Fascinated with the idea of “abroad” he forms relationships with the recipients of these gifts, most of whom are rich, lonely women. When the real world starts to look too bleak, Sasitha seeks greener pastures through virtual relationships he builds on Facebook and Skype with Sri Lankan women of his own class, working abroad. But when nothing seems to go right, he grows desperate[10]

The film 'Bahuchithawadiya' was created to express this condition. As you know, in the 60s and 70s Sri Lanka had a closed economy. The ideology of the Left grounded in materialism and it is called in Sinhala 'Bauthikawadaya'. It shaped and disciplined the world view of a majority of youth belonging to that era. The art work created during that period is also a representation of this.

Examples of precedents can be found in Handagama's films, or in Dharmasiri Bandaranaike's 'Thunveni Yamaya,' or even from the 60s or 70s commercial cinema. But such anti-heroes – Gamini Fonseka, Senadheera Rupasinghe or Wally Nanayakkara were dashing crooks and conmen. They were also more ethical and morally upright. They were loyal to their friends and faithful lovers and husbands to their wives. They were in fact heroes. Credit is due to this young film maker for making an intelligent movie that is (intentionally or not) very funny at times. The challenge now is to find an intelligent audience.

'We are like thrown away twigs; they may sprout but there are no roots'.As far as I know, however, after the year 2,000, there are no noteworthy films that portrayed the life of the youth so authentically.Malaka Dewapriya's The Undecided fills that void, I conclude. One may wonder why I took a long and arduous route to arrive at the conclusion. In my opinion, the analysis provides an appropriate backdrop for the better understanding of the protagonist in Malaka's Undecided
