Sunbury is an unincorporated community in Liberty County, in the U.S. state of Georgia.[1]

History

Sunbury was founded in 1758, and named after Sunbury, England, the native home of a first settler.[2] Variant names were "Sunbery" and "Sunbury Landing".[1] A post office was established at Sunbury in 1793, and remained in operation until 1841.[3]

Sunbury was incorporated as a town in 1791.[2] Sunbury served as the county seat of Liberty County from 1784 until the seat was transferred to Riceborough in 1797.[4]
