The Cooper T58 was a Formula One car built by Cooper Car Company for the 1961 Formula One season, It was driven by Jack Brabham.
Development
The car was designed by Owen Maddock, it was a new design to take on the Coventry Climax V8 engine as their Cooper T55 and other teams used the older straight-4 engine due to the new engine was delayed due to late work on it. One chassis was built and Cooper elected to have Jack Brabham drive the T58 as teammate Bruce McLaren drove the older T55 to help the team with the constructors.
Racing history
The T58 made its debut at the 1961 German Grand Prix, Brabham qualified second behind Phil Hill's Ferrari and led the race but crashed.[1] Brabham qualified tenth at the Italian and on pole at the United States but retired from both races due to overheating.[2][3]
The Cooper team scored 14 World Championship points during 1961 but none were scored with the T58, the team reverted to the older T55 and the newer Cooper T60 for 1962.
