"Princess" is a song by American singer Pia Mia released on May 15, 2020.[1] The track marks Pia's first release under Republic Records (UMG) after previously being signed to Interscope Records as well as being an independent artist preceding the release. The song serves as the lead single to Pia Mia's upcoming debut studio album.

Background

Preceding the single release, Pia Mia made her acting debut in the movie After, released in 2019, and released the movie's theme song "Bitter Love" correspondingly.[2] After a handful of singles released under Mia's independent record label Cherry Pie Records, Pia signed to Republic Records and Electric Feel Entertainment in 2020.

Composition

"Princess" samples and interpolates the 2007 single "Kiss Kiss" by Chris Brown featuring T-Pain.[3] Pia Mia spoke on the creation and meaning of the song, stating, "I was in the car on a long drive to a friend's house playing throwbacks when 'Kiss Kiss' came on. I went directly into a studio session that night and made 'Princess'. It's a fun, unifying record that's empowering for women without alienating the guys. It brings us all together. Right now, the world is experiencing dark times, and so I really wanted to bring some light. My new music is strong, it's sexy, it's confident. It's about having fun, embracing your sexuality and unapologetically being yourself."

Music video

A visualiser for the song, filmed on FaceTime and shot in isolation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, was premiered on Paper magazine's website before being uploaded Pia's YouTube channel hours later on May 15, 2020.[4] An official lyric video for the song premiered a week later on May 21, 2020.
