Bluffmaster is a 2005 Indian Hindi-language romantic comedy film directed by Rohan Sippy and produced by Ramesh Sippy. The film stars Abhishek Bachchan, Ritesh Deshmukh, Priyanka Chopra, Boman Irani and Nana Patekar. The story line is based on the Argentinian film Nine Queens and the American movies Matchstick Men and The Game. Bluffmaster was released on 16 December 2005, and received positive response from critics. The film became a moderate box office success earning a "hit" verdict, as well as being the 17th highest-grossing Bollywood film of 2005.[1]

Sanjay Dutt was the original choice for the role of "Roy Kapoor" and Aishwarya Rai for the role of "Simi".[not verified in body]

Story

Roy Kapoor (Abhishek Bachchan) is a conman who deceives everybody, including his girlfriend Simi (Priyanka Chopra). On the day of their engagement, however, Roy's true character is exposed and she leaves him. One day he drank a lot and saved by getting under the truck by Dittu ([[ Ritesh Deshmukh)an amateur conman . Then they cheats with a family and a men who had lot of black money.One day in the club Roy kappor (Abhishek bachhan) gets unconcious and fall down.Then Dittu (Ritesh Deshmukh) takes him to hospital where he learns that he has a tumor and will die within three months mean while his girl friend Simmi (Priyanka Chopra) gets engaged with someone to whom she doesn't love and going to marry him.

Dittu's father and many others have been duped of their life savings by a man called Chandru (Nana Patekar), who is whimsicaly ruthless and resorts to violence on the slightest pretext. Before he dies, Roy decides to do a good deed for Dittu and con Chandru of his stolen wealth. However, while planning the complex con, Roy's cancer enters its final stages.

The movie has borrowed heavily from Nine Queens (Argentina), The Game (US) and Matchstick Men (US).[citation needed]

Allusions

  • When Roy and Dittu attempt a con in a cinema hall, the movie playing is Ramesh Sippy's hit film Shaan. This film starred Abhishek Bachchan's father Amitabh Bachchan.
  • The song "Do Aur Do Paanch" is originally from the film of the same name, which starred Amitabh Bachchan, the father of Abhishek, lead actor of this film.
  • The majority of the background music of the film and some dialogues were taken straight from films of Sippy Productions.
  • Bluffmaster is based on the movies Criminal and Nine Queens.[citation needed]
  • The movie bears many resemblances to the Hollywood film Matchstick Men, a Ridley Scott work starring Nicolas Cage. Cage's name in Matchstick Men was Roy and Bachchan's name in Bluffmaster is Roy Kapoor.
  • The ending is inspired by the 1997 Michael Douglas film The Game.[citation needed]
  • The number plate MH-01-C-9211 was the same taxi used in Bluffmaster (2005) when Abhishek Bachchan chases Riteish Deshmukh for his car, as well as in Ramesh Sippy's next 2006 venture, Taxi No 9211.

The soundtrack was released on 20 November 2005. The background score was composed by Sameeruddin.[citation needed] According to the Indian trade website Box Office India, it was the tenth-highest-selling soundtrack album of that year, with around 14 lakh (1.4. million) units sold.[2]

Reception

Bluffmaster received mixed response from critics.[citation needed] At the box office, the film had a below average opening but recovered through its theatrical run, becoming a moderate commercial success.[citation needed] Box Office India rates it as a "semi hit".[3]
