John E. Shaw is a major general in the United States Air Force and United States Space Force; he was the commander of the Combined Force Space Component Command of the United States Space Command, and the Space Operations Command of the United States Space Force.[1][2]

Military career

He entered the Air Force in 1990 as a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy with a degree in astronautical engineering and a minor in Russian language.[2]

He has worked in a variety of air and space operations and staff positions, including operations tours in the 50th Space Wing, the National Reconnaissance Office, the 32nd Air Operations Group, and the Space Warfare Center. His operational commands have included the 4th Space Operations Squadron, the 50th Operations Group and the 21st Space Wing. Prior to being commander, he was deputy commander of Air Force Space Command, worked at the United States Strategic Command as Director of the Commander's Action Group and as Deputy Director for Operations, and in the Pentagon as an Air Force intern.[2]

Shaw took over command of the Combined Force Space Component Command (CFSCC) and 14th Air Force after he and Major General Stephen N. Whiting traded their current positions, with Whiting taking over Shaw's position as deputy commander of the Air Force Space Command.[1]

During a change of command ceremony on November 20, 2019, Shaw highlighted the history of 14th Air Force leading coalition forces against adversaries under the command of Major General Claire Chennault and the importance of continuing to work with allies and partners to overcome future national defense challenges. He said, "This is a particularly special command to take. It is one that is combined, because it is about partners and teamwork. We are indeed stronger together; we can go faster together; and we can go higher together; and I’m grateful to be part of that team."[1]

With the 14th Air Force redesignated as the Space Operations Command on December 20, 2019, he retained command of the unit as commander.[3]
