Joshua Daniels (born Joshua Tracey[2] on 26 February 1996) is an Irish professional footballer who currently plays as a winger for English EFL League One club Shrewsbury Town. He has represented Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland at youth international level.
Club career
Early career
Daniels was born in Derry and began his youth career at hometown and boyhood club Derry City. He scored his first professional goal for the club against Finn Harps in 2016.[3] He went on to make 57 league appearances for the club, scoring 2 league goals.[1] On 19 August 2017, Daniels signed for NIFL Premiership club Glenavon.[4] On 11 July 2018, Daniels scored the winner in a UEFA Europa League qualifying match against Norwegian club Molde FK in which Glenavon came back from 1-0 down to win 2-1.[5] In January 2019, he signed a new two-year deal with Glenavon, keeping him at the club until 2021.[6] During his time with the Lurgan Blues, he made 88 league appearances, netting 13 league goals.[1] Throughout early 2020, Daniels was linked with a move away from Glenavon, with fellow NIFL Premiership clubs Glentoran and Larne reportedly interested.[7]
Shrewsbury Town
Daniels was very close to signing for Glentoran, however, a late swoop meant that on 3 August 2020, Daniels signed for English League One club Shrewsbury Town on a two-year deal.[8]
International career
Daniels has represented his country of birth, Northern Ireland, at under-19 level.[9] In 2016, he accepted a call-up to a training camp with the Republic of Ireland under-21 team. After being involved in one training camp with manager Noel King, he did not make an appearance for the team and caused confusion for Daniels as to which country he would be representing.
Personal life
Daniels lost his mother, his sister, two of his younger nephews and his brother-in-law in the Buncrana Tragedy when a car slipped on algae and plunged into Lough Swilly in Buncrana, County Donegal, Ireland, on 20 March 2016. Daniels has stated that his mother and sister were his biggest fans and continuing to play football was what was keeping him going.[10]
