Parliamentary elections were scheduled to be held in Somaliland on 27 March 2019, alongside local elections. However they were postponed by the Electoral Commission, without a new date being set, and the Commission did not indicate when a new date would be announced. The elections had previously been postponed several times, with the previous elections having been held in 2005.[1] In August 2019 the National Electoral Commission postponed the election again, until at least 2020.[2]

On 12 July 2020 political parties reached agreement to hold parliamentary and municipal elections in late 2020.[3][4]

Electoral system

MPs are elected in six multi-member constituencies coterminous with the Regions of Somaliland, using open list proportional representation for a five-year term.
