The UK - EU Free Trade Agreement (UK - EU FTA) is a planned agreement between the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the European Union that is due to be signed before when the transitional period ends.[1][2]
History
Brexit
The UK - EU Free Trade Agreement negotiations are a result of the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union or Brexit.[3]
This agreement is to follow on from (but is not conditional to) the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement, which was signed at the conclusion of Brexit negotiations.[4]
Negotiation rounds
The UK EU Trade Negotiations began on 31 March 2020 and are due to be concluded by the end of October 2020,[5] after which the draft treaty must be ratified by both parties and officially enter into force from 1 January 2021.
As of July 2020[update] there have been five rounds of trade negotiations. The March round was held in person at Brussels, the second round was cancelled due to the outbreak of the Coronavirus.[6] Subsequent rounds were held using video conferencing.[7]
