The 1996 Wildcats were led by first-year head coach Rob Tomlinson. They played home games at University Stadium in Chico, California. Chico State finished the season with a record of five wins and five losses (5–5, 3–1 NCAC). The Wildcats were outscored by their opponents 181–187 for the season.
