Roopa Revathi (Template:Lang-ml), also known as Roopa K.R., is an Indian playback singer and violinist from Kerala. She started her career as a playback singer in the Malayalam movie Madampi in 2008. She has also recorded songs for Tamil and Kannada films. She was the winner of the reality show Amrita TV Super Star Global, a musical talent hunt show hosted by Amrita TV.[1][2]
Personal life
Roopa was born in Ernakulam, Kerala on 31 July 1984. She started learning Carnatic music at the age of 5 under Malini Hariharan and Tamarakkadu Govindan Namboothiri. Now, she is continuing it under P Unni Krishnan and M. Jayachandran. She also started learning the violin when she was 7, under Sri. Sunil Bhasker, Sri. T.H.Subrahmaniyam and has now started taking advanced lessons from Sri. Kalaimamani Embar Kannan.
Career
Roopa debuted as a playback singer in 2008 with the song "Ente Sharike" in B. Unnikrishnan's Malayalam film Madampi under music director M. Jayachandran.[3]
One of the few women fusion violin players in Kerala, who has a tremendous following on social media too, Roopa has been sharing stages with K S Chithra for years. She often performs with her band, composed of many gifted musicians, plays for movies, has brought out albums and has taken herself to new heights with the instrument.[4] In 2011, she debuted as a violinist in the Malayalam film industry through the Prithviraj Sukumaran-starrer Urumi. Deepak Dev was the composer of the film. Roopa, who has a popular YouTube channel in her name, mostly performs with renowned independent artistes such a keyboardist Sumesh Anand, drummer Jaffer Haneefa and guitarists Justine and Jackson Sebastian.[5]
