Virginia's 66th House of Delegates district
Virginia's 66th House of Delegates district elects one of 100 seats in the Virginia House of Delegates, the lower house of the state's bicameral legislature. District 66 represents the city of Colonial Heights as well as part of Chesterfield County. The seat has been held by Republican M. Kirkland Cox since 1990. Cox served as the 55th Speaker of the House of Delegates from January 2018 to January 2020.[1]
Elections
2017
In the November 2017 election, Democrat Katie Ann Sponsler, an Air Force veteran and former park ranger who was then a stay-at-home mother, ran against Cox, a former public school teacher and coach.[2]
2019
In the November 2019 election, Cox defeated Democratic challenger Sheila Bynum-Coleman.[3] However, he lost his position as Speaker as Democrats won a majority in the House of Delegates.
2021
The 2021 election will have an open seat in the 66th district as Cox has announced he won’t run for re-election, choosing to focus on his campaign for governor.[4]
