Mehra is a surname among some of Khatri communities of North India. According to Aditya Malik, Mehra(Mahara/Mehar/Mara from book kumaon ka ithihas by Badri Dutt Pandey) remains a powerful community of Rajput landowners in Kumaon Division of Central Himalayas.[1] The name may derive from the word Mihir, meaning sun,[2][need quotation to verify] or mean chief or master.[3]
Later modifications of this surname are Mehrotra and Malhotra. Whilst Mehra is a general Hindu or Sikh name with origins in the Punjabi language,[3] Mehrotra and Malhotra are derived from the name of a Khatri clan whose founder has been claimed to be Mehr Chand.[4] All the variants remain in use.
