Naam Pirandha Mann (English: Our Motherland) is a 1977 Indian Tamil-language film, starring Sivaji Ganesan, Gemini Ganesan and K. R. Vijaya in the lead roles. Kamal Haasan plays a supporting role, together with Phataphat Jayalakshmi.[1]

Plot

Vettaikara Thevar (Sivaji Ganesan) is a rich landlord that lives with his wife Devanayaki (K. R. Vijaya) and younger sister Valliyammai (Phataphat Jayalaxmi). Unbeknownst to his family, he is also Santhana Thevar, the masked vigilante leader of a group that terrorizes the British colonizers in town and helps the locals. Former soldier Joseph joins Santhana Thevar's group and also befriends Vettaikara Thevar but remains clueless that both are one in the same. Santhana Thevar is hurt during a mission and Joseph rescues him but is presumed dead. Eventually, the British learn his secret identity and Valliyammai is murdered in an attempt to draw out Santhana Thevar. Bound by a promise to Devanayaki, he surrenders. He escapes his death sentence at the last moment and is freed as India gains independence. Years later, the family is now reduced to penury and his son Ranjith (Kamal Haasan) is bitter young man. He resents the fact that his father's sacrifices have resulted in only misery for the family. The two clash due to their contrasting world views.
