Akshata Narayan Murty (born April 1980)[1] is a British-based Indian fashion designer. She is the daughter of N. R. Narayana Murthy, a founder of the Indian multi-national IT company Infosys, and Sudha Murty. She holds a 0.93% stake in the company. Her personal wealth became the topic of British media discussion in 2022 in the context of her claiming non-domiciled status in the UK.[2]

Early life and education

Murty was born in Hubli, and raised by her paternal grandparents as her father N. R. Narayana Murthy and her mother Sudha Murty worked to launch their technology company, Infosys.[3][4] At the age of two, her parents moved her to Mumbai.[4] She has one brother, Rohan Murty.[5]

Murty attended Baldwin Girls' High School, Bengaluru, and later studied economics and French at Claremont McKenna College in California; she has a diploma in clothes manufacturing from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising,[4] and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Stanford University.[4]

Career and investments

In 2007, Murty joined Dutch cleantech firm Tendris as its marketing director, where she worked for two years, before leaving to start her own fashion firm.[4] Her fashion label closed in 2012.[6] In 2013, she became the director of Indian venture capital fund Catamaran Ventures[4] that she co-founded with her husband Rishi Sunak.[7] Since 2015, she has owned a 0.93% share of her father's technology firm Infosys, valued at £700 million,[2] and shares in two of Jamie Oliver's restaurant businesses, Wendy's in India, Koro Kids and Digme Fitness.[8] She is a director of Digme Fitness and the Soroco that her brother Rohan Murty co-founded.[8]

Personal life

Murty is married to Rishi Sunak, whom she met at Stanford University, in California in August 2009.[4][9] She has two daughters, Anoushka and Krishna.[5][2] She owns a flat on Old Brompton Road and a Grade-II listed mansion in Kirby Sigston, Yorkshire.[8] She lived with her husband at 11 Downing Street in London while he was the Chancellor of the Exchequer.[8]

She is an Indian citizen and a non-domiciled UK resident,[3][8] which temporarily entitles her to pay no tax on her income outside Britain, subject to an annual payment of £30,000.[2] Her personal wealth became the topic of British media discussion in 2022 in the context of her being wealthier than Elizabeth II and yet not paying tax in the UK on her unremitted income from Infosys dividends, £11.5m for the tax year 2021/2022.[8][2]
