Alex Tchuimeni-Nimely (born 11 May 1991), commonly known as Alex Nimely, is a Liberian-English footballer who plays for Crystal Palace as a striker on loan from Manchester City.
Club career
Early career
Born in Monrovia, Liberia, Nimely began his career at Mighty Barrolle and Cotonsport Garoua. In December 2007, he went on a trial with Manchester City. He has been described by Sven Erickson as the most talented youngster Manchester City has ever signed. At the age of 15, he scored a total of four goals in the CAF Champions League finals and became the second highest scorer. Nimely was also the youngest-ever player registered in CAF Champions League.
Manchester City
On 16 January 2008, Nimely signed a four-year deal with Manchester City from Cameroonian side Coton Sport FC de Garoua. He made his debut as a substitute during a 6–1 win against Burnley on 3 April 2010. In May 2010 he signed a new four-year contract with Manchester City until June 2014.[2]
Loan to Middlesbrough
On 17 September 2011, Nimely signed a three-month loan deal with Middlesbrough.[3] His first appearance came in the League Cup against Crystal Palace. Nimely's first league appearance was as a substitute three days later in a 0–0 draw against Ipswich Town.[4]
Loan to Coventry City
On 12 January 2012, Nimely signed a loan deal with Coventry City until the end of the season.[5] He scored his first goal on his debut in a 3–1 win over former club Middlesbrough as well as 2 assists. He managed to secure a total of 11 penalties converted into goals by his teammates and seven assists in 17 starts and three substitutions.[6]
Loan to Crystal Palace
On 10 January 2013, Nimely signed on loan with Crystal Palace, until the end of the 2012–2013 season. He became Ian Holloway first signing since he took over at Crystal Palace F.C. He made his debut coming on as a substitute in a 1–0 away defeat to Burnley on 12 January.
International career
On 12 May 2010, Nimely rejected a call-up from Liberia for 2010 World Cup qualifiers and declared to the press that he chose to play for England, as his father is English.[7] He was called up to the England U-20 for the 2009 U-20 World Cup. He scored his first goal in the final group stage match against Uzbekistan.[8] He received his first call up to the England U21 side in November 2011 but was forced to withdraw from the squad due to injury.[9]
