Alice Amter is an English actress who grew up in children's home owned by an aunt and uncle of hers in Warwick New Road, Birmingham and is best known for her character Mrs. Koothrappali in the American sitcom The Big Bang Theory. Later raised in Birmingham by a German mother, she attended Milverton Junior and Infant School and she received a Bachelor of Arts in Modern Languages and International Relations at Wolverhampton University. Amter has lived in many places, including England, France, Germany, Japan (where she taught English in the early 1990s), and the United States; as a result she can speak English, French, German, Japanese and Spanish. She moved to Los Angeles in the early 1990s. Despite being best known for playing an Indian character, Amter has no Indian ancestry.[4][5]
