Amherst County High School is a suburban public high school, grades 9–12, serving Amherst County, Virginia. As the only high school in the county, ACHS offers a comprehensive program: from advanced (AP) classes to classes offered through a reciprocity program with local colleges that allows students to earn both high school and college credit at the same time. In addition to the academic program, Amherst County High School has a comprehensive vocational-technical department that includes Welding (offering certification), Auto Mechanics, LPN Nursing (certification offered), EMT-B (certification offered), Masonry, Carpentry, and Agriculture.[1][2][3]
Athletics
A full roster of sports are offered, including football (Region III Dist 4 State Champions 1995, 2006, 2007, Reg III Dist.4 State runner-up 2008 and 2009), Basketball, Baseball (VA Reg III, Div 4 State Champs 2003), Softball, Golf, Swimming, Tennis, Wrestling, Track & Field, Soccer, and Volleyball.
The football program has achieved state and national success. ACHS football was ranked #1 in the state and high in the national rankings during its two state champion seasons (2006 and 2007, coached by Scott Abell). The football team has since made it to the state championships in 2008 and 2009 where they were ultimately defeated by Heritage High School. Although, the team performance has dramatically fallen in the past five years with back to back three-win seasons.[clarification needed]
