Anadolu Agency (Turkish: Anadolu Ajansı, abbreviated AA) is an international news agency headquartered in Ankara, Turkey and is a state-run news agency of the Turkish government.[1][2][3][4]

History

The Anadolu Agency was founded in 1920 during the Turkish War of Independence. Journalist Yunus Nadi Abalıoğlu and writer Halide Edip, fleeing the occupied capital, met in Geyve and concluded that a new Turkish press agency was needed. The agency was officially launched on April 6, 1920, 17 days before the Turkish Grand National Assembly convened for the first time. The Anadolu Agency helped announce the first legislation passed by the Assembly, which established the Republic.[5]

Services

Anadolu Agency provides wire news service, an image library, news graphics, and video. Its remit is to provide news of Turkey and the Turkish government to the rest of the world.[6] AA currently broadcasts in Turkish, English, Arabic, French, Kurdish (Kurmanci and Sorani), Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian (BCS), Russian, Macedonian, Albanian and Persian. It has a network of reporters in 86 countries. The products offered are available by subscription or purchase.

Leaking of American troop positions in Syria

The Anadolu Agency leaked secret locations of American military bases within Syria and also published the numbers of US and French troops stationed there. This was condemned by the State Department who proclaimed that it posed a serious security risk for American soldiers in the region.[7]
