Aston Medical School (AMS) is a recently opened fifth school[2][3][4] within Aston University, located in Birmingham city centre, UK. It will become the 34th medical school in the UK and 6th in the Midlands.[5]
Course and admission
From September 2015 AMS has started to take PhD students into Aston Medical Research Institute (AMRI). In September 2016, AMS will be starting a taught MSc course in Surgery for Specialist Registrars and this will coincide with Aston’s 50th Anniversary. The first undergraduate MBChB students will join AMS in 2017, subject to regulatory approval by the General Medical Council. By 2018 Aston Medical School will have 150 students in total. AMS will offer various research options for postgraduate students and also a taught degree in Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) combined with a "mini-MBA".
Fees
AMS will be funded through an entirely new model, involving widening participation and social mobility. There will be 100 students in each year, with 80 paying premium, realistic fees, which will subsidize 20 places for students from disadvantaged backgrounds in Birmingham and the Black Country.
Research
Aston Medical Research Institute (AMRI) is the Translational Medicine arm of Aston University and brings together all five schools with a distinct focus: to rapidly develop new and affordable medical therapies and diagnostics for global use with relative ease. In the first instance, AMS researchers are focused on two complementary areas of Cardiology and Pregnancy Complications. A number of Early Career Researchers from the USA have joined AMRI and AMS on Marie Curie Fellowships. The ACALM Study Unit founded by Rahul Potluri is in collaboration with Aston Medical School and has undertaken notable research.[6][7]
