Aurelio Martínez, professionally known as Aurelio, is a Honduran musician and politician. He is a singer, percussionist, and guitarist known for his Garifuna music and is considered a Cultural Ambassador of the Garifuna people.[1] [2] [3] According to the Guardian, he became the leading Garifuna performer after the death of musician Andy Palacio. [4]

From 2006-2010, Martinez served as a congressman for the National Congress of Honduras, becoming its first black member. [5] [6]

Biography

Aurelio grew up in Plaplaya, a small Garifuna village in Honduras. [7] [8] The Garifuna people are descendants of West African slaves and indigenous Caribbean natives. [9] [10] Paranda is the name of their guitar-heavy music. [11] Aurelio's father was a folk singer, well-known in his community for his improvised Paranda songs. [12] Aurelio's mother was also a musician, teaching her son to both sing and write at a young age [13] [14]. As a result of his musical upbringing, Aurelio began performing as a boy, even at sacred Garifuna events where kids were normally not allowed. [15]

In 2008, Aurelio was selected as worldwide musician by Afropop legend Youssou N’Dour for the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative. [16] [17] [18] He played some shows with his mentor and also collaborated with him for his second album Laru Beya. [19]

His 2017 album "Darandi" celebrates the 30th anniversary of Aurelio's musical career. [20]
