Beiwai Tan (Traditional Chinese:北衛灘)is located approximately 44 nautical miles northwest of Dongsha Island in the northeastern part of the Nansha Islands in the northern South China Sea, about 80 kilometers away from Dongsha Island.[1][2] It is a submerged coral shoal, circular in shape, with a shallowest depth of about 60 meters.[3]

The Beiwai Tan is currently under the actual control of the government of the Republic of China (Taiwan),[4] administratively administered by the Zhongxing Village, Qijin District, Kaohsiung City.[5] The government of the People's Republic of China also claims sovereignty over it and administers it under the jurisdiction of the People's Government of Jieshi Town, Lufeng City, Shanwei, Guangdong Province.[6]
