Bergman Island is a 2021 internationally co-produced drama romance film, written and directed by Mia Hansen-Løve. It stars Vicky Krieps, Tim Roth, Mia Wasikowska and Anders Danielsen Lie.

It had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on 11 July 2021. It was released in France on 14 July 2021, by Les Films du Losange.

Plot

A filmmaking couple, Chris and Tony Sanders, travel to Fårö, the island where Ingmar Bergman lived and worked that is hosting a screening of one of Tony's films. Tony is an admirer of Bergman and is inspired by the island. Chris, who is ambivalent to the island and dislikes Bergman for his personal failings, specifically as a father, struggles with writer's block and misses their daughter, June, who is staying with Chris's mother.

During the screening of Tony's film, Chris sneaks out and explores the island with Hampus, a film student she met at the church where Bergman is buried. After the screening, Tony takes the touristy "Bergman Safari" and is upset when Chris doesn't accompany him. When she gets home, Chris confesses creative problems and that she misses June.

The next day, Chris walks Tony through the outline of her latest screenplay, hoping that he'll help her with the ending she's been unable to write herself. In it, former lovers Amy and Joseph meet on Fårö after many years for the wedding of mutual friends. They rekindle their romance despite each being in other relationships, and find they are unable to commit to each other. Joseph leaves the island without telling Amy, leaving her heartbroken. Several times during this sequence Tony interrupts Chris, takes phone calls, or is otherwise disengaged, and ultimately says he can't help her with the ending.

Tony leaves Fårö to collect June and bring her to the island. Alone, Chris travels to the Bergman Estate and runs into Hampus on his way out. He leaves her the key and she falls asleep. She is woken up by the "Joseph" from her screenplay, who she refers to as "Anders," the actor's real name. Anders speaks to her as if she's directing the movie, walks her through a set in Bergman's library, and later they attend a cast party to celebrate wrapping the shoot which is attended by the actors from her story. Chris and Anders share a heartfelt goodbye.

Tony returns to the island with June, who reunites with Chris at a windmill on Bergman's property.
