Blaž Kavčič (born 5 March 1987 in Ljubljana) is a Slovenian professional tennis player, turned professional in 2005. He considers clay his favourite surface. He is the highest ranked Slovenian male player ever, with highest ATP ranking (#71) achieved in June 2012.

Tennis career

Kavčič turned professional in 2005 playing exclusively on the ATP Futures and ATP Challenger Series circuit for three seasons. In 2006, Kavčič made his Davis Cup debut for Slovenia and won two Futures tiles, the first one in Čakovec over Predrag Rusevski and the second one in Zagreb over Rok Jarc.

In 2008, Kavčič was playing a mixture of Futures and Challengers. He also qualified for ATP events – in Zagreb, where he lost to Roko Karanušić and in Pörtschach, defeating Teymuraz Gabashvili in the first round before losing to Igor Kunitsyn. He finished the year ranked #260.

2009 saw a continuation of Kavčič playing on the ATP Challenger Series circuit, where he had a breakthrough year. He made the final of the San Remo Challenger as a qualifier before losing to Kevin Anderson. Instead of playing the Roland Garros qualification Kavčič continued to focus on the Challenger circuit and won titles in Alessandria and Constanța.

He lost in the final of the tournament in Rijeka after beating Mathieu Montcourt in the semi-final. That was Montcourt's last match before he died of a cardiac arrest.

In 2010, he reached the second round in Houston on clay, but lost to big serving Sam Querrey. Kavčič played in the 2010 French Open where he won his first grand slam match by defeating Eduardo Schwank after Schwank retired in the fourth set. He became the first Slovenian male player to directly qualify for a Grand Slam tournament without having to go through qualifying rounds.

In 2011 at Chennai Open he reached his first career quarterfinal on the ATP Tour. He lost there against Tomáš Berdych from Czech Republic. In the 2011 Australian Open he reached the second round for the first time in his career. In 2011 at Serbia Open he lost in the quarterfinal match against Novak Djoković.
