Brainchild is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics.

Publication history

Brainchild first appeared in X-Men vol. 1 #62-63 (November–December 1969), and was created by Roy Thomas and Neal Adams.

Fictional character biography

Brainchild was once a Swamp Man of the Savage Land, a tropical preserve hidden in Antarctica. He became one of the Savage Land Mutates, changed by Magneto to give him unusually high intelligence, although he at least formerly only had the emotional level of a child.[volume & issue needed] Brainchild was one of Magneto's first Savage Land Mutates, and has been involved in all the Mutates' subsequent activities.

He is central to the selling of the Savage Land's resources to a corrupt faction within S.H.I.E.L.D.[1]

One incident, involving robotic dinosaurs, brings Brainchild into conflict with the heroic duo known as Moon Boy and Devil Dinosaur.[2]

Powers and abilities

Brainchild’s superhuman intelligence and computer-like mind enable him to make scientific and mathematical calculations with the speed and accuracy of a highly advanced computer.

Other versions

  • Barbarus and Brainchild are eaten by the zombified Ka-Zar and Zabu in Marvel Zombies Vs. The Army of Darkness.[3]
  • Brainchild appears in a two-part What If? story: #46 (February 1993) - 'What If... Cable Had Destroyed The X-Men?' and #47 (March 1993) - 'What If... Magneto Took Over The USA?'

In other media

Brainchild appears in the X-Men: The Animated Series episode "Reunion" parts I and II along with the other Savage Land Mutates including Vertigo, Sauron and Amphibius. Xavier briefly wonders if he is the "Master" the Mutates refer to and follow, but it is in fact Mister Sinister.
