"Break Up with Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored" on YouTube |
"Break Up with Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored" (stylized in all lowercase) is a song recorded by American singer Ariana Grande for her fifth studio album Thank U, Next (2019). The song was written by Grande, Savan Kotecha, Kandi Burruss, Kevin Briggs alongside its producers Max Martin and Ilya Salmanzadeh. It samples the song "It Makes Me Ill" by American boyband NSYNC.[1] It was released by Republic Records as the third single from the album on February 8, 2019, the same day the album was released. The music video, directed by Hannah Lux Davis, accompanied its release the same day.[2]
Background and release
"Break Up with Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored" was announced as part of the Thank U, Next track listing on January 22, 2019.[3] The song replaces "Remember", a track previously planned to close the album yet was too personal for Grande to release.[4] A snippet of the song was uploaded via Instagram on January 23, 2019.[5] On February 5, two days before the album's release, Grande announced that the song would serve as the album's third single.[6]
Music video
The music video for the song accompanied its release the same day, premiering on Grande's YouTube channel. It was directed by Hannah Lux Davis and features Riverdale actor Charles Melton. Billboard magazine called the video "sexy and stylish promo with Grande ruling at a party and putting on her best looks at a mansion in Hollywood Hills, the same mansion for several other singer music videos such as Charlie Puth's "Attention" and Selena Gomez's "Hands to Myself".[2]
