Production

Production approval

Coronation Street star Julie Hesmondhalgh joined the cast of series three in a pivotal role.

While conceiving and writing the first series in 2012, Broadchurch creator and lead writer Chris Chibnall designed his story to be told as a trilogy.[4][5] Series one was written to work both as the first part of this trilogy as well as a self-contained drama. The first series had to be self-contained, he felt, in case the show did not do well in the ratings and a second series was not commissioned.[5][6] When Chibnall pitched series one to ITV in the autumn of 2012, he also pitched series two and three at the same time.[7]

On 1 December 2014, a number of media outlets reported that ITV had commissioned a third series of Broadchurch. The Sun first reported the news, claiming Chibnall was rushing to finish a script so that filming could begin in Dorset in July 2015.[8][9] Later that day, ITV denied that a third series had yet been commissioned.[10]

On 23 February 2015, ITV confirmed that Broadchurch, as well as David Tennant and Olivia Colman, would return for a third series immediately after the series two finale, repeating the use of "Broadchurch will return" after the closing credits.[11] Jane Featherstone and Chris Chibnall continued as executive producers of the programme in series three,[12] with Dan Winch replacing Richard Stokes as producer for the final series.[13] Chibnall also acted as lead writer.[14]

Writing

Filming for the third series began in May 2016 and broadcast started on 27 February 2017.[15] The final series follows Miller and Hardy as they investigate a serious sexual assault. Creator Chris Chibnall said, “We have one last story to tell, featuring both familiar faces and new characters. I hope it’s a compelling and emotional farewell to a world and show that means so much to me.”[16] The Shores and Dorset Rape Crisis have advised Chibnall throughout writing the scripts.

Casting

Following the series two finale, David Tennant and Olivia Colman were the first two cast members to be confirmed to return for the third and final series. On 12 April 2016, ITV officially announced the casting for the third and final series, with Jodie Whittaker, Andrew Buchan, Arthur Darvill, Carolyn Pickles, and Adam Wilson returning to play their respective roles as Beth Latimer, Mark Latimer, Rev. Paul Coates, Maggie Radcliffe, and Tom Miller.[12] Joe Sims confirmed his return as Nigel Carter via Twitter.[17] Charlotte Rampling confirmed she will not return as Jocelyn Knight QC,[18] with her character's absence addressed in the premiere episode as Knight prepares for a case in London.

New series three members included Mark Bazeley, Georgina Campbell, Julie Hesmondhalgh, Charlie Higson, and Sarah Parish. On 23 May 2016, Lenny Henry was confirmed to be joining the cast alongside Roy Hudd.[19] Sunetra Sarker was spotted on location during filming.[20] Press release and promotional pictures also saw the addition of Sebastian Armesto, Becky Brunning, Jim Howick, Chris Mason, and Deon-Lee Williams to the cast of Broadchurch.[21]
