Brooklyn Preparatory High School is a 9-12th grade college-focused high school in Brooklyn, New York.

BPHS is considered a small school with 500 students enrolled, yet is one of three schools on the Harry Van Arsdale campus; sharing the building with two other schools: Williamsburg Preparatory High School and Williamsburg High School for Architecture and Design.

Academics

As Brooklyn Prep is a college prep high school, students take four years of the major core subjects, and are provided opportunities for Advanced Placement and elective courses as well.

S.T.A.R. Student Program

Students who demonstrate academic and community excellence have opportunity to be a S.T.A.R. student and receive special rewards. The program was designed to rise to and reward excellence in our students. S.T.A.R stands for:

  • Scholarship: Maintain 85+ cumulative GPA & present Portfolio every semester
  • Three Activities: Complete 20 hours of extracurricular activities or Community Service each year
  • Advanced Courses: Complete an AP & Honors course each year (10th-12th grade)
  • Regents: Achieve 80+ on Math, 75+ on English, 3+ on an AP exam, and 500 on SAT Critical Reading and Math

Senior Capstone

Senior Capstone is a course designed to build college level reading, writing and discussion for senior students. The first semester, students read and discuss a plethora of ideas and questions around controversial issues in the world today. Students are currently studying the role of media in the 2016 Presidential Election. The second semester, students research and write in-depth about topics of their interest.

Activities

Brooklyn Prep offers students a variety of extracurricular activities, community service and workplace experiences in addition to their academics, occurring both within the school day and after school. Some of our partnerships are as follows:

  • College Bound Initiative-Students receive hands-on support from a college counselor in applying to universities and obtaining financial aid.
  • College Now-BPHS students attend colleges and earn college credit
  • Junior Achievement-Students develop and teach lessons to local elementary school students. Students receive Job Shadow opportunities to companies such as Disney, Marvel Comics, ABC News, the New York Stock Exchange and many more.
  • New York Cares-BPHS students volunteer at libraries, schools and soup kitchens, and organize blood drives, book drives and coat drives to help those in need.
  • Youth Philanthropy Initiative-Students research and compete to win $5,000 for a charity of their passion
  • Futures and Options-Students receive paid internships
  • Girls Be Heard-Female students are empowered to perform and write to express themselves
  • Reel Works-Students learn about the film and production process through creating their own films
  • SEO-Students receive college counseling and career help
